Common Troubleshooting Issues with a Stihl FS56 Trimmer/Brushcutter

Whether you call it a String Trimmer, Brushcutter, Strimmer, Weed Whacker or a Weed Eater, there are many issues that can arise.

Over the summer months you may find yourself using your machine frequently to battle an ever growing lawn. Lawn care will be a constant task that many of us will have to endure, with constant use and improper storage can all lead to wear and tear as well as issues preventing you from this tedious chore. Here is a guide to help you identify and rectify any issues you might be having.

Engine does not start in warm start:

Move the choke knob to the symbol (above) and continue cranking until the engine runs

If the engine does not start:

Check that all settings are correct

Incorrect Starting Position

Check with your manufacturer's manual to make sure you are starting with the correct procedure eg. for a warm or cold engine.

Never pull the starter more than 3 times in the choke position as this may cause your engine to flood.

Petrol

Check that there is fuel in the tank and refuel if necessary.

Fuel Filter

Check to see if the fuel filter is congested.

Spark Plug
  • Check that the spark plug boot is properly connected.
  • The electrode gap is wrong or damaged.
  • The spark plug is not fitted correctly and needs to be tightened.
Carburettor
  • The carburettor is clogged with fuel left in the tank over a period of time.
  • The carburettor is adjusted incorrectly.
Rewind Starter

Check that the spring is not broken and the rope has the correct tension to start the machine.

  • Repeat the starting procedure.

If there is a noticeable loss of engine power / poor running behaviour:

  • Check the spark plug.
  • Check the Air Filter.
  • The carburettor may be incorrectly adjusted.
  • Insufficient fuel.
  • Muffler is contaminated.

Engine is flooded:

Move the choke knob to F and continue cranking until the engine runs. You can normally tell if the engine is flooded as there will be a strong smell of petrol (gasoline) or if petrol is coming from the muffler. In this case, leave the machine for 20-30 mins.

Cutting attachment rotates when the engine is idling:

Turn the idle speed screw (LA) counter clockwise until the cutting attachment stops moving and then rotate the screw another 1/2 to 3/4 turn in the same direction.

Changes in cutting behaviour:

Check tightness, look for cracks, sharpness of blade and replace if necessary.

General and Winter Storage:

To prevent any of the above from happening, correct storage will be a major factor to help keep your machine in good condition for many years.

Storing for Constant Use:
  • Wait for the engine to cool down.
  • Empty the fuel tank to avoid the engine from getting blocked.
  • Keep away from any sources of ignition.
  • Make sure that your machine is free from debris.
Long Term Storage:

Anytime after 3 months, you will need to prepare your machine for inactive storage.

Here are some tips:

  • Empty and clean the fuel tank then dispose of fuel properly.
  • Run the engine until the carburettor is dry to prevent the carburettor diaphragms sticking together.
  • Remove, clean and inspect the cutting attachment.
  • Coat metal cutting attachments with corrosion inhibitor.
  • Thoroughly clean the machine, specifically the cylinder fins and air filter.
  • Store the machine in a dry and secure location.
