Choosing a Suitable Guide Bar for Your Chainsaw

Hannah Published on Oct 14, 2022 View Comments

There are many guide bars designed with varying features to help you do the task intended, plus a range of brands to choose from such as Stihl, Husqvarna, Makita and Oregon and non genuine brands. Whether the purpose is for light duty to heavy duty or for personal to professional use, there will be a guide bar for the job. Below are some factors that you should consider when selecting a guide bar for your chainsaw.

Sprockets VS Solid Nose

Most chainsaws will use a sprocket nose guide bar because the sprocket allows the chain to rotate more quickly around the bar without losing power. Solid nose bars are known to be more sturdy and are used in conditions where it is sandy or dirty. But as chainsaws are getting ever more powerful, the nose gets hot and power is lost.

Narrow VS Wide Nose:

There are a variety of bars on the market that have narrow and wide noses. The narrow bar helps reduce kickbacks whilst wider noses increase borning performance.

Extendable & Replaceable Bars:

Some bars have a replaceable sprocket nose that can be useful when changing the pitch of the chain. Additionally if the sprocket gets damaged this part can be changed so the whole bar doesn't need replacing.

Woodwork Carving:

Carving bars immediately show a different shape than other guide bars used in the tree surgeon trade. The bar slopes to a more slender tip which allows the user to cut more narrow and more precisely when creating art or for a more experienced arborist.
