How to find the Model / Serial Number on a Briggs & Stratton Engine
The 11 or 12 digit engine model and type number is an important part of locating the correct parts for your Briggs and Stratton engine. The location can vary depending on the machine the engine is fitted to. The number is generally stamped directly onto the metal of the engine.
6 digit model numbers will be in the following format:
XXXXXX-XXXX-XX
5 digit model numbers begin with 0:
0XXXXX-XXXX-XX
The first 6 numbers identify the engine model (XXXXXX-), the second set of numbers identify the engine type which includes mechanical parts, colour of paint, decals, governed speed, and Original Equipment Manufacturer (XXXX-XX). The last 2 digits also represent the revision number.
Below is a list of locations your model, type and revision number can be found, depending on the machine.
