Why Your Chainsaw May Cut Out When Throttle is Applied

Is your engine losing power when you are pushing the throttle all the way down? Here we explain various reasons that could be causing your chainsaw to stall at wide-open throttle (WOT).

Clogged Fuel Filter

A fuel filter is situated at the fuel lines inlet which carries the gasoline from the tank to the carburettor. The gasoline filter (which is located within the fuel tank), can get deposits forming as a result of poor gasoline quality. When a fuel filter is blocked, it doesn't do its job of filtering the fuel so the carburettor gets a clean and uncontaminated gasoline charge. This means the flow of fuel to the engine is disrupted which can then cause the engine to stall.

Remove the chainsaws fuel cap and pour some gasoline into a different container when inspecting the fuel filter. Filter the tank by using a thin metal rod and examine the quality of the filter. If it seems to be clogged, replace with a new filter. If clean, it can be left as is so you should consider checking other potential causes.

The fuel filter may have also come off the fuel line so this should be checked by opening the fuel tank as this can also make the engine stall.

Restricted Fuel Lines

The engine can be suffocated from gasoline when at peak demand for fuel if there is any slight restriction or debris in the fuel lines. The fuel line may be clogged from stale fuel deposits, more reasons to cause your chainsaw to cut out when applying throttle. If a fuel line is cracked, it will leak gasoline and draw air from outside into the fuel line.

If the line is leaking fuel, it needs to be replaced. If the engine still stalls, examine the line at is connection to the tank and check if it's tight enough.

Dusty Air Filter

A clean air filter helps ensure the engine runs smoothly. Dust contaminants present in the air get filtered out by the air filter before going into the carburettor. The engine is likely to stall when the filter gets plugged with dirt and dust as too much air is filtered which deprives the engine of adequate air which is necessary for combustion.

The air filter on a chainsaw is located at the rear. Loosen the fasteners and remove the filter to inspect for any dirt. If it isn't too bad, a soap and water solution will be ok. If it's still not in a good condition after cleaning, it will need to be replaced.

Clogged Carburettor

Having a clogged carburettor can be a reason if fixing the filters still hasn't solved the problem. A carburettor is designed to formulate the air-fuel mixture which is then supplied to the engine for combustion. When fuel is stored in the tank for longer durations, it will degrade in its quality and will form white, sticky deposits that clog the fuel jets which will impact the fuel flow to the engine.
